Learning to Love the Stinkin' Rose
or...
Making the Best
of a Good Thing!

The clove is quite tasty
When prepared in your dinner
Your friends will be thinkin'
That you're a real winner

If everyone eats garlic
It will not offend
The most gracious of eaters
You might start a trend

Of healthy good eating
A diet just fine
It'll fit right in
With your favourite wine

Get hooked on 'the rose'
And you might tend to drool
But all your smart friends
Will think you are cool

So don't be afraid
To eat lots of it
And please don't be shy
Eat more than a bit

You might even get frisky
And stay up all the night
For the old stinkin' rose
Is a lover's delight

You'll live a good life
As you indulge in the rose
But try not to belch
You could wrinkle your nose!

And the best part of all
You can say it out loud
"I'm a GARLIC FANATIC *
And of that I am proud!"

* Winston Churchill said, "A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject."
There was once was a farmer named Zeke
Who was considered a stinkin' rose freak
He ate garlic each day
Which made people say
His taste buds are not mild or meek!

His neighbors all aged over time
And they all thought that it was a crime
As the years crept on by
Zeke stayed young and spry
And just simply stayed right in his prime

One day he was out on the land
Planting garlic the old way by hand
He spied a young maiden
Who was heavily laden
With garlic that she had just canned

“What's that in those jars?” he did say
“Why it's garlic I pick every day
I grow it a lot
And cheap it is not
But my customers always do pay”

He asked where she's off to this day
“To market, all day there I'll stay”
And he started to think
'I'll wed her, there must be a way'

But he was approaching old age
And she was just 'out of the cage'
At the young age of twenty
She always had plenty
Of boys whose hormones just raged

She liked to can garlic in autumn
The scapes were fresh when she got 'em
And she worked like a bandit
Much garlic she canned it
She liked not to sit on her bottom!

Meeting Zeke was a pleasant surprise
Her interest was starting to rise
She'd bring food to eat
Lots of veggies and meat
With garlic in all but fruit pies

Her heart was stolen by Zeke
She adored him in spite of his reek
She called herself Millie
And laughed herself silly
At his jokes tho' some were quite weak

They got married in the finest of clothes
They're happy and it really shows
The children came quick
And the names they did pick
In a hurry, were Bud, Clove, and Rose

As the kids grew they learned about growing
About garlic and did lots of hoeing
The garlic grew strong
And the scapes were quite long
In the breezes that always were blowing

In a tradition of garlic untired
Even though Zeke & Millie retired
The kids now run things
Ma & Pa live like kings
They have what they really desired

So here's what it should mean to all
'The Rose' can keep problems quite small
Eat lots every day
And then you can say
"We smell, but we're having a ball!"
